Interior Design Shows 2014

There is no denying how varied the interior design shows are these days.

There is certainly no one style that we must all slavishly follow.

And how we interpret design, be it contemporary or traditional, is very much up to the eye of the beholder!

So here’s what my eye caught during the 2014 design shows:

An interesting shaped piece of furniture showing off some traditional fabrics in a fun way.

This has caught my eye because it’s a modern day interpretation of Tiffany lighting and I think it’s interesting.

This is more of a design lesson than a specific ‘latest style’.

Don’t forget the power of graphic images to pull a room together.

Triptychs work wonders and fours in a big square look super smart.

This is another light by Cox of London.  Welded iron with glass hand blown into the blocks.

VOTE: Couldn’t love it more! SUPER HOT

If you are privileged enough to have a piece of quartz or other stunning stone and can back light it (a GREAT effect).  Please make sure you have a consistent source of light – not blobs like these.

VOTE: NOT HOT (though it could be…)

These chairs are by Tom Faulkner. His work is exquisite. Metal is his friend.  He makes lamps, tables, consoles and chairs.  I was frightened of sitting on it because I feared it would let me down on the comfort front.  It didn’t.

The Little Green Paint Company produced this stand.

How simple is paint?  Of course it is, but what amazing impact it can have.

I don’t know who made these.

They seem to be everywhere.  I’m sure this one is made with precious metals and jewels and the likes but most are pretty cheap and shoddy these days so I dismissed it as one of them…

Full marks for display here.  I love this plumed bird bathing in the caged shower unit.

Shame I hate the caged shower unit.  It looks like a prison.  And they are quite the rage I think…

I’m very fond of adding piping and using a different fabric on the backs of chairs.

This seems very over done though.  Trying too hard.

I’ve been working with fabric covered doors lately and leather is a fascinating material for this. A trip to Bill Amberg’s Studio in Queen’s Park is quite an eye opener.  Just look at these options:

Acoustic problems are not to be dismissed.  They can be disruptive in the work place and uncomfortable at home.  Texture can really help as a solution.

Cute little ceramic lights with bling rings.  Use them in numbers.  One simply won’t do…

Why have boring handles when you can have fun?

This was the light installation at the front of 100% Design.  Abstract, simple, powerful.  A great start to the show.
